Inquiry & Research
As part of my graduate studies, I examined the underrepresentation of African American male teachers in K-12 education. This research explores historical context, systemic barriers, and the impact representation has on students and school environment
The Underrepresentation of African American Male Teachers in K-12 Education
Graduate Inquiry Project | University of Alaska Anchorage
Reflection
This project made me think more about the bigger issues that affect who becomes and remains a teacher. I already knew there was a lack of representation, but conducting interviews of Black male teachers and hearing their stories made the problem feel real and not something I see in articles. From this experience, I better understand how factors such as money, societal views of teachers, and the work environment can discourage Black men from becoming teachers.
This work also showed me how important representation is for students and for the whole school community. Looking ahead, this project shapes how I think about equity in education and the difference I hope to make as a teacher.
